GenYacht:An interactive generative design system for computer-aided yacht hull design Shahroz Khan et al. (2019 Ocean Engineering) (,) - 2020.1.7 Ab: In the present work, a new digital design system, GenYacht, is proposed for the creation of optimal and user-centred yacht hull forms. GenYacht is a hybrid system involving generative and interactive design approaches, which enables users to create a variety of design alternatives. Among them, a user select a hull design with desirable characteristics based on its appearance and hydrostatics/hydrodynamic performance. GenYacht first explores a given design space using a generative design technique (GDT), which creates uniformly distributeed designs the given design constraints. These designs are then presented to a user and single or multiple designs are seleted based on the user's requirements. Afterwards, based on the selections, the design space is refined using a novel space-shrinking technique (SST). In each interaction, SST shrinks the design space, which is then fed into GDT to create new designs in the shrank space for the next interaction. This shrinkage of design space guides the exploration process and focuses the computational efforts on user-preferred regions. The interactive and generative design steps are repeated until the user reaches a satisfactory design(s). The efficiency of GenYacht is demonstrated via experimental and user studies and its performance is compared with interactive genetic algorithms. | |
A generative sampling system for profile designs with shape constraints and user evaluation Kemal et al. (2019 CAD) (,) - 2020.1.3 Ab: A sampling approach is proposed for deriving profiles of an existing product design using profile similarities and primitive shapes, such as circles, triangles, and ellipses, as constraints. A common approach for a designer is to generate or collect sketches to create a design space. The design space can be explored to retrieve the samples directly based on requirements or crossing over them to obtain new design variations. In this stage, the proposed method can be used to derive a large number of samples from a design image to work with. First, the user clicks on the image to define each design features as cubic Bezier curve segment. The primitive shapes are then constructed for each segment and used as constraints, such that the control points can move only to where these shapes allow. Moreover, the design similarities are computed using the triangles based on their anisotropy ratios, which are measures of the deformation between corresponding triangles and which are used to ensure that they are hightly related samples in the example design. Modified Hausdorff distances are also computed between the biarc approximations of the samples. There is diversity provided that these distances anre large enough. A customized sampling algorithm that fulfills our constriants is executed several times distinct samples is retrieved from the design space by minimizing the Audze-Eglais potential energy. We provid an additional tool with which the users can adjust the weights for each control point to guide the sampling process and record the chosen samples. The main goal of this study is to generate samples, which are diverse but still convey the key features of the supplied shpae. Using the settings related to similarity, a designer can derive samples sticking to their initial idea to explore its better version or more creative results that they could not imagine on their own. The proposed system offers simplicity automating every step that must be done by the user. Thus even inexperienced users without needing any programming skill can cary shapes defined using a set of points in a matter of seconds., and experienced uses can even focus on spcific shape features weighting them without dealing any constraint or rule definition requirements. In this paper, we present geometric design methods to construct cylindrical and axisymmetric origami structures that can fit between two given surfaces. Due to the symmetry of the structures, a strip of folds based on the generalized Miura-ori cells is first constructed and then replicated longitudinally/circumferentially to form the cylindrical/axisymmetric origami structures. In both designs, algorithms are presented to ensure that all vertexes are either on or strictly within the region between the target surfaces. The conditions of flat-foldability and developability are fulfilled at the inner vertexes and the designs are rigid-foldable with a single degree-of-freedom. Fast Interactive Object Annotation with Curve-GCN Huan Ling et al. (2019 CVPR) (,) - 2019.04.23 Ab: Manually labeling objects by tracing their boundaries is a laborious process. In [7, 2], the authors proposed Polygon-RNN that produces polygonal annotations in a recurrent manner using a CNN-RNN architecture, allowing interactive correction via humans-in-the-loop. We propose a new framework that alleviates the sequential nature of Polygon-RNN, by predicting all vertices simultaneously using a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). Our model is trained end-to-end. It supports object annotation by either polygons or splines, facilitating labeling efficiency for both line-based and curved objects. We show that Curve-GCN outperforms all existing approaches in automatic mode, including the powerful PSP-DeepLab [8, 23] and is significantly more efficient in interactive mode than Polygon-RNN++. Our model runs at 29.3ms in automatic, and 2.6ms in interactive mode, making it 10x and 100x faster than Polygon-RNN++. | |
The Shape Space of Discrete Orthogonal Geodesic Nets Michael Rabinovich et al. State of the Art in Methods and Representations for Fabrication-Aware Design Amit H. Self-collisions are the primary obstacle in this goal, and these are not addressed in prior work. One key component of our algorithm is a succinct parameterization of these types of linkages. The fast continuous collision detection that arises from this parameterization serves as the foundation for the discontinuous optimization procedure that automatically improves joint placement for avoiding collisions. While linkages are usually composed of straight bars, we consider curved bars as a means of improving the contractibility. Namely, given a 3D object representing a piece of furniture, our goal is to apply a minimum amount of modification to the object so that it can be folded to save space --- the object is thus foldabilized. We focus on one instance of the problem where folding is with respect to a prescribed folding direction and allowed object modifications include hinge insertion and part shrinking. We develop an automatic algorithm for foldabilization by formulating and solving a nested optimiation problem operating at two granularity levels of the input shape. Specifically, the input shape is first partitioned into a set of integral folding units. For each unit, we construct a graph which encodes conflict relations, e.g., collisions, between foldings implied by various patch foldabilizations within the unit. Finding a minimum-cost foldabilization with a conflict-free folding is an instance of the maximum-weight independent set problem. In the outer loop of the optimization, we process the folding units in an optimized ordering where the units are sorted based on estimated foldabilization costs. We show numerous foldablization results computed at interactive speed and 3D-print physical prototypes of these results to demonstrate manufacturability. | |
Origami structures with a critical transition to bistability arising from hidden degrees of freedom Jesse L. Silverberg et al. We propose a novel sampling strategy that samples in the discrete domain. Our experimental results show that the proposed method could efficiently generate valid configurations. As a typical origami pattern, the waterbomb tube could be adopted to the design of mechanical etamaterials. However, existing designs predominantly make use of the radial expansion/contraction motion of the structure, thereby limiting its full potential to be explored. Here we report a twist motion of tubular mechanical metamaterials based on waterbomb origami that is previously undiscovered. We demonstrate through a detailed kinematic analysis that the initial twist is a rigid-origami motion if the corresponding row of the tube under twist is fully squeezed with both line and plane symmetry, whereas all the subsequent twist motion requires material deformation. The twist angle per axial strain and its relationship with the geometrical parameters of the tube are revealed. Experimental results show the enhancement in stiffness of the tube with the occurrence of the continuous twist motion. We envisage that this finding could greatly expand the application of the waterbomb tube in the design of origami metamaterials with programmable and tuneable mechanical properties. | |

3D Shape Segmentation via Shape Fully Convolutional Networks Pengyu Wang, Yuan Gan et al. Synthesis of Fast and Collision-free Folding of Polyhedral Nets Y. Hao et al. We propose a method that creates linearly foldable polyhedral nets, a kind of unfoldings with linear collision-free folding paths. We combine the topological and geometric features of polyhedral nets into a hypothesis fitness function for a genetic-based unfolder and use it to map the polyhedral nets into a low dimensional space. An efficient learning strategy is used to optimize the fitness function to produce the optimal nets. We experimentally demonstrate that the proposed method can find linearly foldable nets for highly non-convex polyhedra with substantial complexity. The technique presented in the paper will provide a powerful tool to enable designers, materials engineers, roboticists, to name just a few, to make physically conceivable structures through self-assembly by eliminating the common self-collision issue. It also simplifies shape morphing devices. Additionally, our approach makes foldable papercraft more accessible to younger childern and provides chances to enrich their education experiences. |

A methodology for transferring principles of plant movements to elastic systems in architecture Aline Vergauwen et al. These exists a kinematic connection between two surfaces linked through a curved crease that can be used to generate a folding motion. However, due to the interdependency of geometry, forces and material properties the design of pliable structures based on curved-line folding is very complex. To facilitate the design process, adequate computational modelling methods are essential. This paper presents two ways of modelling: a geometric modelling mehtod based on discretisation of the crease pattern and a method based on Finite Element modelling Analysis (FEA). The proposed methods are validated by means of a case study in which a physical model is compared to digital ones. It can be concluded that the method based on FEA corresponds very well withthe physical model, proving its potential. The accuracy of the geometric modelling is improved by the introduction of a set of guidelines based on the direction of the principal bending moments in the pliable structure. Furthermore, the case study exposses how the material-dependent behaviour of pliable structures increases the complexity of the design and should certainly be part of future research. |

A methodology for transferring principles of plant movements to elastic systems in architecture Simon Schleicher et al. These mechanical devices come in all shapes and sizes and are traditionally conceptualized as uniform and compatible modules. Typically, these systems gain their adjustability by connecting rigid elements with highly highly strained hinges. Though this construction principle may be generally beneficial for architectural applications that increasingly demand custom-made solutions, it has some major drawbacks. Adaptation to irregular geometries, for example, can only be achieved with additional mechanial complexity, which makes these devices often ery expensive, prone to failure, and maintenance-intensive. Searching for a promising alternative to the still persisting paradigm of rigid-body mechanics, the authors found inspiration in flexible and elastic plant movements. In this paper, they will showcase how today's computational modeling and simulation techniques can help to reveal motion principles in plants and to integrate the underlying mechanisms in flexible kinetic structures. By using three case studies, the authors will present key motion principles and discuss their scaling, distortion, and optimization. Finally, the acquired knowledge on bio-inspired kinetic structures will be applied to a representative application in architecture, in this case as flexible shading devices for double curved facades. |

It has been seen that it is possible to obtain a simulation by handling the transforms applied to the carton faces. Reducing the face graph to a spanning tree imposes a hierarchy on the faces and allows the required driving motions to be established. The cuts effectively made in forming the tree correspond to dyads in which the angular positions of two adjoining faces need to be established. This can be done by imposing constraints which say that the edges o either of each cut must come together. |

Kirigami skins make a simple soft actuator crawl Rafsanjani et al. We designed highly stretchable kirigami surfaces in which mechanical instabilities induce a transformation from flat sheets to 3D-textured surfaces akin to the scaled skin of snakes. First, we showed that this transformation was accompanied by a dramatic change in the frictional properties of the surfaces. Then, we demonstrated that, when wrapped around an extending soft actuator, the buckling-induced directional frictional properties of these surfaces enable the system to efficiently crawl. |

A wavy auxetic surface and the prediction model inspired by Miura-ori Lin Yu et al. (, PDF) - 2018.10.24 Ab: Based on the mechanism of the negative Poisson's ratio of Miura-ori, a new kind of wavy surface is presented in this paper by replacing the polylines in Miura-ori with trigonometric curves. This wavy surface not only inherits the auxetic responses of Miura-ori in both directions, but also eliminate the corners and creases. By applying coefficients and offsets, a model to predict the Poisson's ratio of the wavy surface was developed based on the Miura-ori folding mechanism. To calculate the coefficients and offsets, least square method was used to linearly fit the parametric simulations results on the mechanical properties and the thickness. Although losing the foldability in the replacement, the design concept prevides an effective way to construct the similar systems by enumerating the origami and tessellations. |

SE3-Nets:Learning Rigid Body Motion using Deep Neural Networks Arunkumar Byravan and Dieter Fox (, PDF) - 2018.09.21 Ab:We introduce SE3-NETS which are deep neural networks designed to model and learn rigid body motion from raw point cloud data. Based only on sequences of depth images along with action vectors and point wise data associations, SE3-NETS learn to segment effected object parts and predict their motion resulting from the applied force. Rather than learning point wise flow vectors, SE3-NETS predict SE(3) transformations for different parts of the scene. Using simulated depth data of a table top scene and a robot manipulator, we show that the structure underlying SE3-NETS enables them to generate a far more consistent prediction of object motion than traditional flow based networks. Additional experiments with a depth camera observing a Baxter robot pushing objects on a table show that SE3-NETS also work well on real data. |

Creating Linkage Permutations to Prevent Self-Intersection and Enable Deployable Networks of Thick Origami Alden Yellowhorse et al. This work introduces methods for creating permutations of linkage-based, origami-inspired mechanisms that retain desired kinematics but avoid self-intersection and enable their connection into deployable networks. Methods for reconfiguring overconstrained linkages and implementing them as modified origami-inspired mechanisms are proved and demonstrated for multiple linkage examples. Equations are derived describing the folding behavior of these implementations. An approach for designing networks of linkage-based origami vertices is demonstrated and applications for tessellations are described. The results offer the opportunity to exploit origami principles to create deployable systems not previously feasible. |

Creating Foldable Polyhedral Nets Using Evolution Control Yue Hao et al. (, PDF) - 2018.09.15 Ab: Recent innovations enable robots to be manufactued using low-cost plannar active material and self-folded into 3D structures. The current practice for designing such structures often uses two decoupled steps: generating an unfolding (called net) from a 3D shape, and then finding collision-free folding motion that brings the net back to the 3D shape. This raises a foldability problem, namely that there is no guarantee that continuous motion can be found in the latter step, given a net generated in the former step. Direct evaluation on the foldability of a net is nontrivial and can be computationally expensive. This paper presents a novel learning strategy that generates foldable nets using an optimized genetic-based unfolder. The proposed strategy yields a fitness function that combines the geometric and topolocial properties of a net to approximate the foldability. The fitness function is then optimized in an evolution control framework to generate foldable nets. The experimental results show that our new unfolder generates valid unfoldings that are easy to fold. Consequently, our approach opens a door to automate the design of more complex self-folding machines.
